The possibilities are endless for our young people if we provide them with the resources they need to succeed.
Igniting Minds addresses the widening education gap, worsened by the pandemic, for students in Chicago’s underrepresented communities. We offer free meals, comprehensive academic support, and mentorship to elementary and high school students, focusing on igniting their passion for learning early on. Our goal is to equip every student with the tools needed to break the cycle of extreme poverty. In today’s challenging climate, our mission has never been more urgent.
Students can’t reach their full potential or engage in classroom activities if they’re worried about where their next meal will come from. Our out-of-school meal program goes beyond just providing food. We use the universal connection of food to teach students how to prepare healthy meals, while also connecting them with local business owners and professionals. This not only expands their palates but also their networks, exposing them to exciting new career paths.
Igniting Minds offers academic advising, monitoring, and enrichment activities that complement school-based learning and allow students to explore their personal interests. Data consistently shows that obtaining a post-secondary credential is one of the most effective ways to ensure economic mobility. We are committed to utilizing evidence-based practices to close the education and income disparities affecting underserved communities. By providing targeted interventions—such as free tutoring, test preparation, and peer mentoring—we make a unique contribution to the pre-college program landscape in Chicago.
Providing students with limited resources the opportunity to explore post-secondary options that have historically been out of reach is essential for creating lasting change. Our curated affinity group college tours and career experiential learning programs provide foundational experiences that enable young people to connect their current experiences to their future goals.
Igniting Minds supports students in navigating both college and skilled trades as postsecondary options, ensuring they have the tools and mentorship to choose the best path for their future. While our programs are centered around food access, we recognize that careers in hospitality extend far beyond the kitchen.
Our workforce development program, Beyond the Kitchen, equips young people with the skills and experience needed to succeed in all hospitality leadership roles. Through hands-on training, industry partnerships, and professional development workshops, participants gain real-world experience, preparing them for sustainable careers.
Our Black & Brown Youth Leadership Summit is a transformative annual event dedicated to empowering youth. It also welcomes young leaders of color and allies to foster leadership and collaboration through engaging workshops, thought-provoking discussions, and impactful mentorship opportunities. The BYS provides a safe space for participants to experience racial healing, and explore leadership, community building, and self-advocacy while connecting with like-minded peers and role models.
We also invite industry leaders and professionals to offer financial literacy sessions, providing real-world examples and actionable advice to help participants build strong economic foundations for their futures. Together, we’re cultivating the next generation of changemakers, prepared to lead with purpose and pride.
